A Jazzy Sacramento Restaurant
Sacramento’s West End has a rich history of jazz culture—especially at the former Marshall Hotel, home of the Clayton Club, where jazz legends like Duke Ellington and Billie Holiday performed. When the hotel became a Hyatt Centric, the owners wanted to brand its first-floor restaurant—first named Headliner— to honor the jazz-age history. I created a concept inspired by piano keys, vintage piano books, and musical notations.
The clients chose to move forward with this concept, and we later shifted it to reflect the restaurant’s new name: the Seventh Street Standard. I designed these concepts with support and collaboration from team leaders Jana Singer Arbogast and Christine Knorps at The Gettys Group. All work is owned by TGG and clients.

The typeface combination highlights a modern, calligraphy-inspired font with movement to it, which feels musical. A wide sans serif balances out the display type. Patterns are inspired by piano keys and a musical staff of five lines.

Once the name was changed, we shifted the concept to include a secondary mark featuring a musical rest symbol shaped like the number seven.
